Gilfillan Farm

Properties

All of the identified structures on the Gilfillan Farm property are in need of varying levels of restoration work. It is the mission of the Historical Society of Upper St. Clair to restore the historic buildsings and reconstruct those that are no longer standing, to the standards set forth by the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

The Farm House

Constructed on the farm house was started in 1855 and took two years to complete. The Gilfillan's moved into their new home in 1857.

The Big Barn

Built in 1857, the Big Barn is still in use today. It requires extensive foundation repairs in order to meet restoration standards for historic places.

The Goat Barn

Located near the Big Barn, this building has housed pigs and rams. Currently, the Goat Barn is home to Horses with Hope's goats.

The Tractor Barn

Built around the 1870's, the tractor barn was constructed for the purpose of storing the farm's machinery and large equipment.

The Horse Barn

Since it's construction, the multi-section Horse Barn has been home to horses, donkeys, and mules. It is now home to Horses with Hope's miniature horses.

The Tool Shed

Behind every great farm is a variety of tools that are needed to complete each and every job. Learn more about it's history, and the restoration that is needed.

The Summer Kitchen

Long before the modern day craze of outdoor kitchens was popular, summer kitchens were an important staple to living in the 1800's.

The Smoke House

Built in the 1860's, the smoke house played a vital role in preserving and storing meats that were a byproduct of life on a traditional Pennsylvania farm.

The Outhouse

From the size to the number of seats available, the exact history of the Gilfillan Farm outhouse is unclear. Evidence points to a popular stagecoach line.

The Spring House

It is unknown when the Spring House was built, but evidence suggests that it is the oldest structure and was built before the Gilfillan's ownership of the farm.

The Bedner Shed

It is estimated that the Bedner Shed was built in the early 1900's on the nearby Bedner Farm. In 2014, the Bedner Shed was moved to Gilfillan Farm.

The Chicken Coop

Even though chicken coop is no longer standing, it is the goal of the Historical Society of Upper St. Clair to reconstruct a replica of the original building.

The Granary

A granary can be a building or a designated room in a barn where grain is stored. The Gilfillan Farm granary is a building that is elevated from the ground.

The Garage

The garage that is currently on the Gilfillan Farm property is located near the farmhouse. This building is a 2-car brick structure. It is not the original garage.

The Workshop

The timing of the workshop's construction is unknown. It is estimated that it was built in the early 1900's. This is the second building of its kind.
